2024 Mentees
Jayda peoples
My name is Jayda Peoples and I am a resilient and determined individual who embarked on my college journey in the fall of 2019 at Illinois State University. After being involved in multiple Registered Student Organizations and managing classes, I ultimately graduated on December 16th 2023. During my freshman year, I actively engaged in campus life as a member of "Black Girl Code," a mentoring organization supporting women of color. Additionally, I contributed my skills to "A Trend to Follow," an event planning RSO.
The onset of the pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, transitioning my sophomore year into a fully online experience. Despite this, I maintained a commendable GPA and assumed the role of Epistoleus on the executive board for the Gamma Rho chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Taking a gap semester during the pandemic's peak, I returned to ISU in the spring of 2022. Not only did I resume my studies, but I also founded the "Kat Walk Modeling" organization. Under my leadership, the organization thrived, culminating in a spectacular fashion show featuring designers from New York, Chicago, St. Louis, and local student talent. This achievement left an indelible mark on ISU, showcasing my passion and leadership.
I graduated with a Bachelor's in Interdisciplinary Studies, focusing on Education. My future in education looks promising as I reflect on the impact I have made and eagerly anticipate the opportunities my leadership and creativity will bring in my future school district. Grateful for the Preston T. Ross Mentoring Program and my loved ones, I acknowledge the role they played in shaping me into the resilient and charismatic woman I am today. With a sense of accomplishment, I proudly declare myself a member of the Class of 2023.
Nicholas porter
Hello, my name is Nicholas Porter I am a newly proud alumni at University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and a Minor in Photography. My plan is to gain experience to follow my dream of covering american and international sports and telling stories that need to be told. I believe sports is a great outlet for creating a community that encapsulates that love and togetherness, but i also find value in local and real news by spreading awareness and establishing trust in your community. As a journalist, I want to be relied on to do the difficult job and make the difficult decisions, but I also want to encourage and be a role model not only for my family but to those who are above me and those who want to learn from me.
